Chapter 819: These Are The Easy Levels
"... And that's the Mana Crystal you see there."
I held up the Mana Crystal that I dug out from the monster to show the boys.
At first, they seemed to be disinterested in what I was doing but when they saw me carving up the monster, they started to gather around me and actually listened to my instructions as I explained it to them.
The boys stared at the Mana Crystal with wide eyes.
"So... So that's what Big Sis was doing?"
"Oh... She said she didn't know why though?"
"That's why we stopped doing it, right?"
"I understand now... Big Sis probably didn't tell us so that we don't get greedy?"
Eh? Who is this 'big sis' they're talking about? Don't tell me it's Odeta?
Did I miss a lesson where they were brought out to fight monsters and Odeta accompanied them to do so?
I guess I could see Odeta carving up the monster but only because she had watched me do it but wasn't sure why I was doing it in the first place.
She definitely saw me dig out the Mana Crystals from monsters before so she probably thought they were important and thus always did it but didn't know what they were.
Haddock pointed at the Mana Crystal in my hand, "What can they be used for?"
I raised an eyebrow, "Hmm? Pretty much anything that requires mana to function. The street lights you see that light up at night? Those are powered by these. They are basically mana that has been crystallised so anything that uses mana to function makes use of these."
"And why are we collecting them then? We don't need them, do we?"
I wagged my finger at him, "We're not collecting these for our own use. Since there are so many things that use Mana Crystals to function, the Guild would buy them from any Dungeoneers that bring these to them. The bigger the Mana Crystal, the bigger the price. This way, the things in the city get powered and we get paid too."
The boys nodded in understanding.
I then pointed to the Dungeon Rat, "Also, monster materials are also quite useful. Some monsters have parts that are used in crafting things like potions, weapons and armour."
Haddock raised an eyebrow, "Dungeon Rats can be used to craft those things?"
I grinned, "They can be used for alchemical potions so yes."
"So why aren't more people hunting them?"
"That's because there's other better alternatives to their parts that give better effects to the same potions."
"So aside from the Mana Crystal in their bodies, they are effectively worthless?"
"Unless a client wants their parts for some reason and you need to make a potion on the field but you have no access to the alternative parts... Yes."
He nodded, "So would we be stripping it for parts as well?"
I dusted myself before keeping the knife that I used to cut open the monster, "We can leave this one for now since it is not that valuable. If we come across a monster worth stripping for parts, I'll show you boys how to do it at that time."
Ah, so it's a monster house kind of trap.
This one's easier to deal with in my opinion so I wasn't that worried.
The monsters are just Dungeon Rats anyway so these guys should be able to handle them on their own. After all, it's not like the monsters outnumber them.
Haddock was quick to react and shouted instructions to the boys behind him, "Split formation! I'm going left!"
What the formation was quickly became apparent as one of the boys peeled away from the group to join Haddock in attacking two Dungeon Rats while the other three went to face the other two.
I remained where I was and made no move to participate in the fight.

Haddock leapt towards one of the Dungeon Rats and swung his sword towards its head, catching the monster by surprise as it clearly did not expect the Mahun to take the initiative.
He managed to slash through the monster's head, leaving it to roll on the ground in its death throes while he turned to face the other Dungeon Rat.
It let out a shriek and lunged at him, it's claws meeting metal as Haddock raised his sword to parry the strike away.
His companion had taken that opportunity to flank the monster before striking at it in the Rat's blind spot.
His sword drew a large gash along its flank, prompting the monster to forget about Haddock for a moment to shriek at its new attacker.
That ended up costing it its life as Haddock plunged his sword into the monster's head, killing it before it could even retaliate.
On the other side, the three boys seemed to be doing quite well too.
One of the boys, who I assumed was second in terms of skill in the group, took on one of the Rats by himself, leaving the other two to gang up on the last monster.
He managed to avoid a claw swipe before parrying another one to get past the Rat's guard, his sword thrusting into its throat and ending its life.
The other two danced around the last monster and took turns slashing at it when the other guy had its attention.
Eventually, the monster got a little frustrated and tried to bite one of the boys, which he managed to avoid by leaping back.
The other boy leapt on its back and, wielding his sword with both hands, brought down his sword to thrust his blade into the back of the monster's head.
The Rat let out a high pitch squeak before it collapsed on the ground.
The boys all let out a collective sigh of relief as the battle was over.
Not gonna lie, they were pretty good for a group of students. None of them even got hit by the monsters they were fighting.
And it looks like they were pretty quick learners too since Haddock was already trying to cut open the monsters to get to the Mana Crystal.
I was expecting them to feel disgusted by the fact that they had to dig through the monster's corpse to get to the Mana Crystal but they don't seem to have that kind of reservation.
Heck, I'll freely admit it's not something I like to do which was why I let my Shadow Guards do it whenever I had the choice.
Well, it seems like this Dungeon dive would be pretty easy~
