Chapter 31 The Unexpected Answer
Chapter 31 The Unexpected Answer
Before Colin could speak, Felix said in a gentle tone:
"Mr. Colin, there's no need to be so nervous. We just want to ask about the passenger who was wrapped up so tightly in the carriage at noon. Just tell us everything you can remember."
He then directed Lucius and Miles to the enclosed carriage, before adding to Colin:
"This officer needs to check your carriage to see if there are any traces left by criminals."
Another victim is someone who was traveling in the same vehicle as the perpetrator; we hope he can return to the carriage and recall more details.
Colin looked at Lucius and Miles. He still remembered Lucius and knew that this was just a simple conversation and that he wasn't being treated as a suspect, so his nervousness subsided a bit.
He thought about it carefully and then recounted the entire journey from beginning to end when he met the passenger.
Inside the carriage, Lucius drew the black curtains to ensure that people outside couldn't see what was happening inside through the gaps.
After he finished doing all this, he turned to Miles and nodded, saying, "That's it."
Miles made no preparations, closed his eyes and then suddenly opened them, revealing pupils that were even darker than the carriage.
He turned to the corner of the carriage, the spot where Marcus had been sitting. His voice was still hoarse, but not as deep and rapid as before.
Lucius watched with curiosity, wondering what the difference was between the two extractions of the evil name.
About a minute later, Miles' pupils returned to their normal color, and he said in Horn language, "The Evil Name told me that Marcus is hiding in the Upper City."
Lucius sensed the hesitation in Miles's tone. Felix had previously mentioned that the Upper City was a semi-autonomous area for nobles and big merchants.
Lucius is trying to find Marcus in this area, and any mistake could trigger a conflict that neither side wants.
"Let's go find Felix," Lucius finally said.
The two jumped out of the carriage and approached the outdoor café. Just then, Colin started talking about what the passenger looked like after waking up:
"After the passenger woke up, he cursed 'Damn it' in the carriage. I thought something had happened and asked him if he needed help, but he shouted at me to stop the carriage. Before the carriage had even come to a complete stop, he jumped out of the carriage and disappeared."
After listening, Felix looked at Lucius, his eyebrows arching in a questioning tone. Having received an affirmative answer, he turned back to Colin.
"Mr. Colin, you've explained it very clearly. Thank you for your cooperation. We will use your leads to find the criminal."
Colin breathed a sigh of relief and tentatively asked, "Officer, may I leave now?"
“Of course,” Felix nodded. “This was just a brief conversation. You can go back and rest now.”
"I hope you catch the criminal soon," Colin said, rising from his chair and walking back to his carriage, his steps much lighter than when he arrived.
After confirming that Colin had gone far away, the four sat in the backrests, and Lucius announced the results from inside the carriage.
"Uptown..." Felix muttered, putting his coffee cup on the table, then made his decision, "It seems Charles is the only option."
Oliver then turned to Lucius and whispered an explanation of Charles's background.
Charles Williams' father was a hereditary earl, and his seat in the House of Lords was given to his eldest son after he came of age.
His mother originally ran the best cashmere textile workshop in Lancashire, but after marrying the Earl of Williams, she moved the entire production line from South York to near Port Hull.
His cousin is a magistrate judge, and his other cousin is an army colonel.
Charles himself was an absolute core member even within the elite circles of the Upper East Side.
"The power of love is always unreasonable," Lucius thought to himself after hearing this.
It actually made this nobleman go to the detective agency and the police station every day.
"Let's go back first. We need to discuss this with Charles in detail," Felix made the final decision.
The four of them came full of excitement, but in the end they could only walk back to the nearest steam tram station along the way they came.
Halfway there, Lucius suddenly asked Oliver curiously:
"Can't your divination predict in advance when Marcus will come out of the upper city? Perhaps we can ambush him beforehand?"
"Fortune telling isn't a magic bullet; it's subject to many factors," Oliver chuckled, explaining.
"The most direct reason is that the Radiant Ones are not only good at divination, but also at anti-divination. I am only a Radiant One who has been promoted to the second level. If I want to divine Marcus's whereabouts, we will be the first to be exposed. So my initial divination target has always been just that carriage."
Lucius nodded. No wonder Felix had never mentioned using divination to find Marcus.
The carriage quickly fell silent, and at 4 o'clock Lucius and his group returned to the Splin Detective Agency.
"How's it going? Have you taken care of that guy yet?" Gray asked excitedly as he walked up to Lucius, immediately tossing aside the unfinished church assignment he was holding.
"There's a slight problem..." Lucius said, glancing at Eleanor in the room out of the corner of his eye.
She was still wearing a white dress, her dark chestnut curly hair pulled back, and she was tidying up the homework that Gray had just left aside.
"Eleanor, go and call Charles back," Felix instructed Eleanor first, then turned to Miles behind him, "You continue guarding the artifact storage room."
The two nodded in agreement. Lucius sat down on the sofa and, as Gray leaned over and asked in a low voice, "What happened?", he recounted the entire process of retrieving the evil name from the carriage.
Three minutes later, the sound of Eleanor and Charles arguing came from the second floor:
"I'm just stating objectively that Billy and Landis's behavior would damage the dignity of the nobility, and that neither the church nor the law would support them."
"But the two have a very good relationship; they respect and understand each other, even though they..."
Even if they are all men?
……
When Lucius saw the two of them walk out of the side door, they were clearly still holding onto their own convictions, but they tacitly agreed not to discuss the matter further.
"Felix, what do you need me to do?" Charles asked first.
Seeing this, Felix recounted the actions of the group and concluded by saying:
"I want you to use the information in your social circle to find the location that Miles just tracked down, at least to know which nobleman or big merchant it belongs to, and whether these owners have had any unusual contact with visitors from out of town recently."
After listening, Charles calmly replied, "The Viscount Rhodes is hosting an auction dinner next Wednesday. I'll keep an eye out for it."
After Felix resolved the matter, he turned to Lucius and said:
"Marcus must have discovered something when his plan failed this time. Although he probably won't try again anytime soon, you can't gamble on the remaining possibility. Go to the relics storage room later and get a new Night's Watch badge."
Lucius nodded, realizing his knowledge of the occult was insufficient, and then asked:
"Captain, is there any relic that could give me some fighting power? Hmm, constantly being on the defensive might not reduce the opponent's chances of making a move."
"The use of relics is strictly limited; things like the Night's Watch Token are extremely rare." Felix frowned.
Lucius thought about it and realized it made sense. Just as he was about to put the idea aside, Felix suddenly offered a completely unexpected direction:
"How about a revolver?"
