Chapter 260 Falling into a Trap
But Li Ang's attention was drawn to the scene beneath the tree: a huge altar had been erected in front of the main trunk of the Tree of Life.
The altar was made of white jade and its surface was engraved with intricate golden runes. In the center of the altar, a thick silver chain extended upwards from the ground, and at the other end of the chain was a person.
The moment Li Ang saw that figure, his heart clenched.
That person was Eve.
She was wearing a thin white robe, her long hair was loose, and her body was bound by chains to a low-hanging branch of the Tree of Life. She had her head down, so her expression was not visible, but she looked very weak.
Around the altar, hundreds of Valkyries clad in golden armor stood ready, while further out, countless elven guards, wielding spear-shaped divine scepters, formed three tight lines of defense.
On the high platform directly in front of the altar, the Elf King Phoenix sat on his throne, wearing a magnificent royal robe, a crown made of pure gold, and holding his iconic golden trident, the Holy Judgment Scepter.
Beside him stood a young and handsome elf, whose appearance bore some resemblance to August, but whose eyes held a more haughty air.
Shirley whispered to Leon, "He is Leigh Hart, the first in line to the throne."
Lee forced himself to look away from Eve, then exchanged a glance with Sherry, and the two of them followed the flow of people, slowly approaching the viewing area.
According to the plan, they would wait until August launched a general offensive outside the city, drawing the defenders to that side, before launching a sudden attack.
Time ticked by, and the atmosphere grew increasingly heavy. Leigh Hart, on the high platform, would occasionally look up at the sky, as if trying to confirm the time.
Just then, sharp alarms suddenly sounded throughout the holy city, while explosions and roars could be heard in the distance.
"Enemy attack! Those lowly orcs are back again!" an elven nobleman exclaimed.
"Are they insane? How dare they attack on a ritual day?"
There was a noticeable commotion among the garrison, and some of the Valkyries and guards began to move in the direction from which the alarm had come.
But Phoenix, standing on the platform, raised his hand, his authoritative voice resounding throughout the arena: "Silence! Ignore everything over there, the ceremony will proceed as planned! Reihart, begin."
Leihart nodded, turned towards the altar, and began chanting ancient elven prayers. As his voice rang out, the golden runes on the altar gradually lit up.
Although the guards weren't lured away as planned, we couldn't wait any longer.
Without further hesitation, Li Ang activated the [Precognition Ring] instantly, and the trajectory of the next three seconds unfolded before his eyes.
He ripped off his disguise, his wand slid into his hand, and shot towards the altar like an arrow. "Enemy attack! Protect the altar!" the Valkyrie captain shouted.
But Li Ang was too fast. With the blessing of the [Gentle Breeze] spell and the aid of his precognitive abilities, he passed through the gaps between the guards like a ghost and reached the edge of the altar in just a few breaths.
"Mentor Eve!" he shouted, leaping onto the altar and unleashing a wind blade from his wand, precisely striking the silver chains binding Eve.
"clang!"
The chain snapped, and Li Ang caught Eve as she fell. But the moment he touched her, he suddenly felt something was off. He looked down at the person in his arms, and the face was indeed Eve's, exactly the same.
But when his mental energy swept over it, he noticed a subtle difference. The mental energy fluctuations of this body were too weak and too empty, like a beautifully crafted empty shell.
This wasn't the real Eve, alarm bells rang in Leon's mind, but it was too late.
On the high platform, Reihart revealed a victorious smile: "You were right, Father. This human did indeed come for that bastard Eve."
King Phoenix, holding the Holy Judgment Scepter, slowly rose and then walked down the high platform step by step.
His gaze locked onto Li Ang, as if he were looking at prey that had fallen into a trap: "Leihart, don't be careless. After we take care of him, we'll deal with that traitor August."
Li Ang put Eve down from his arms. It was indeed just a substitute made with advanced illusion and alchemy. After landing, it turned into specks of light and disappeared with the wind.
He took a deep breath, held his wand horizontally in front of his chest, and mentally activated the [Grace Ring], trying to activate the Stigmata—but there was no response.
Li Ang's heart sank. He tried again, but the ring remained silent. The vast Titan power within the ring seemed to be bound by invisible chains, and he could not mobilize it in the slightest.
"No need to try." Phoenix had already walked to the altar, and the Holy Judgment Scepter slammed to the ground with a dull thud.
"Within the altar's range, all Titan power will be suppressed. Your greatest reliance is gone."
He raised his scepter, pointed it at Leon, and said mockingly, "Now, let me see how much skill you still have after losing the power of the Titans?"
As soon as the words were spoken, the surrounding Valkyries simultaneously raised their spears, their golden armor gleaming in the light of the Tree of Life.
Further out, thousands of elven guards had completed their encirclement, all the spearheads of their divine scepters aimed at Li Ang at the center of the altar.
It was a trap from the very beginning.
Leon gripped his wand tightly, and thousands of stars spun wildly in his mental world. Without the blessing of the [Grace Ring], his current strength could only reach the threshold of a peak level three wizard at most.
Facing the Elf King, Leighhart, hundreds of Valkyries, and thousands of guards—they were undoubtedly in dire straits.
But instead of retreating, he took a step forward, and blue-green wind magic began to condense at the tip of his wand.
Seeing this, Shirley also took off her hood, drew her twin swords, and silently stood beside Li Ang.
"Well then," Li Ang's voice was eerily calm, "let's give it a try."
Leon and Sherry stood back to back in the center of the altar, surrounded by countless golden figures and spear tips shimmering with magical light.
As Elf King Phoenix slowly raised the [Holy Judgment Scepter] in his hand, the tips of the spears of hundreds of Valkyries simultaneously lit up with various colored magical lights, and thousands of guards on the outer perimeter formed a golden iron wall, tightly surrounding the two of them.
"Kill them." Phoenix's voice was as cold as iron.
The torrent of spells struck again, this time more concentrated and more violent. Without the blessing of the [Grace Ring], Li Ang, though still at the peak of level three, was somewhat overwhelmed by such a saturation attack.
He could only activate the [Ring of Foresight] with all his might, his figure struggling to dodge between the spear tip and the gaps in the spell.
As he dodged, he waved his wand repeatedly, using wind blades and storm swords to shatter the magical attacks that came close to him. Even so, he could only barely protect himself and was unable to break through this impenetrable encirclement.
