Chapter 73 The Soul of Snowball
Chapter 73 The Soul of Snowball
"Zag, you're insane! How can you expect so much from a little dog!"
Mrs. Marsh glared at Zag with displeasure and defended Helford.
Not wanting to argue with Mrs. Marsh, Zag could only mutter under his breath, "Where is it small?"
Mrs. Marsh argued firmly, "Size doesn't matter, and it doesn't look old at all, so of course it's a puppy!"
Upon hearing this, Snowball rolled around laughing, exclaiming, "Hahahaha, if you count by age, Coalball could be Mrs. Marsh's great-grandmother!"
Mrs. Marsh's heart melted when she saw Snowball rolling around on the table, meowing loudly. She reached out and rubbed Snowball's belly, saying, "Oh, my little darling, what's wrong now?"
Watching helplessly as Mrs. Marsh doted on Snowball and Herford, Zag could only silently nibble on his mutton pie at the table.
After dinner, Zag carried a pile of manuscripts he had bought on the black market upstairs to begin studying them.
At first, he found it difficult to read because most of the words in the manuscript were completely different from the common language of the kingdom, and many were Elvish or even Ancient Elvish. Moreover, there were several of these words in almost every paragraph, which greatly affected the fluency of reading.
Fortunately, Snowball proved to be quite reliable at this time, translating and explaining the meanings of many words for him, which allowed him to barely manage to read through several manuscripts, albeit haltingly.
Unfortunately, most of these manuscripts were just "exercises," and they looked just like Snowball had said before. They seemed to have been pulled out of a wastebasket in a magic class. There was very little of value in them; most of them were questions and answers that he couldn't understand even if he understood the meaning of each word, but put them together.
It's worth mentioning that even Xueqiu (a Chinese online forum) couldn't understand it.
"Great fairies don't need to do such boring and disgusting problems!" Snowball crossed its two front paws over its chest, its tone disdainful. "Besides, only Modo would learn magic in such an absurd way!"
Zag retorted, "But you... Snowball, you're over three thousand years old, and you don't seem to know magic, do you?"
Snowball roared angrily, "Meow! Who said I can't do magic?! Meow! The great Snowball knows far more than you can imagine! If it weren't for the great Snowball's soul being lost in... Hmph! Anyway, the great Snowball in its prime could beat ten of you! Stupid dragon! Meow!"
Zag immediately became alert: "A lost soul? Lost in where? Do fairies have souls too?"
Snowball tilted its head awkwardly, answering evasively, "Mmm...fairies are legitimate magical creatures created by the Mother Goddess! How could they not have souls!"
Zag, however, refused to give up and bombarded him with questions: "So, you're injured? You've lost your soul? Can a fairy survive like a normal fairy even if she loses her soul? I thought it was like humans, where the soul leaving the body means death?"
"You're just a stupid dragon, why ask so many questions!" Snowball's ears drooped back guiltily, and his voice unconsciously lowered considerably. "We, um... fairies have fairy homes, it doesn't matter whether we have souls or not... okay, actually it does matter a little, but, anyway, we won't just die like that fragile and stupid Mordo! You see, you know liches, right? Liches also have separated souls, but they can still live normally... Anyway, anyway, we won't get injured!"
Zag tried to explain in more tactful terms: "What I mean is, is there any way to help you find your soul...?"
"Even the Mother Goddess was powerless, and you? A stupid dragon? Humph!"
Snowball was initially dismissive, but then it flew to Zag's shoulder, patted his shoulder with its two paws, and whispered, "But great Snowball acknowledges your loyalty."
Zag felt quite sorry for this foul-mouthed hargimi.
He had never seen other fairies, but if fairies weren't all as weak as Snowball, and Snowball was only forced to hide in a remote sentry post to steal human food because he had lost his soul, then that would be truly pitiful.
Moreover, if he could truly help Snowball recover, he would at least gain the friendship of fairies through this favor, and might even dare to truly contact the demon god Agora.
"Hey, I saved your family. Even if we're not on the same side, you don't have to kill me the moment we meet, do you?"
On the bright side, he might even gain Agora's friendship, which would make things much easier in this world. At least when facing cultists, he would have someone to rely on, instead of just thinking about how to run away whenever he encountered "Zag Liam" on the black market.
Of course, most importantly, although he had only spent less than a month with Snowball, he already considered it family.
"Actually, I'm quite powerful. If it weren't for the limitations of this body, even dragons would be my servants," Zag boasted. "And you saw it yourself that day; the power of a dragon's roar is extraordinary, it's just that my body couldn't withstand it. So if you tell me what really happened, I might actually be able to help you, or Coal Ball might have some ideas. More people, more strength, right?"
Helford was already taken aback by the astonishing amount of information Snowball and Zag were sprawling around, his eyes wide, listening intently.
When Zag mentioned him, he nodded vigorously and whispered in agreement, "Yes, yes, maybe if we brainstorm together, we can find a solution?"
"Even the Mother Goddess can't get into this place, what can you possibly do!" Snowball, though still stubborn, held onto a sliver of hope and whispered, "At the end of the Dragon Era, because of the cooperation between the demon gods and humans, the fairies were living a normal life in the Eternal Supreme Kingdom, but that didn't last long..."
"Not long after, while the Mother Goddess was preoccupied with the Dawn Continent, they secretly captured fairies and other magical creatures for experimentation and research. I was also there at that time..."
"In short, although I eventually escaped, my soul was ripped out, and due to an accident, I got lost in the Land of Annihilation..."
"The Mother Goddess wouldn't descend upon the Land of Annihilation for such a trivial matter, and the Fairy House can't function properly in the Annihilation either. Having lost my soul, I have even less ability to survive in the Annihilation, so..."
"Anyway, with your skill level, going to Annihilation would be like sending yourself to your deaths, so don't even think about it!"
"It's not entirely hopeless..." Zag pondered. "Snowball, do you think a dragon... could survive in Oblivion?"
"Meow!?" Snowball's eyes widened, and it puffed up like a black, spiky ball of fur: "What, what do you mean!?"
Zag explained, "Didn't I say I can summon dragons? Maybe I can have it help you find your soul in the annihilation, but only if my body can withstand the strain of summoning a dragon."

[Snowball's Rant]: I don't believe that stupid dragonborn can really help me find my soul! Humph!
