Chapter 20 Can you see it?
Chapter 20 Can you see it?
This place isn't some haunted house at all. It's clearly a five-star abyss nest prepared for Xiao Hei.
Chen Mo pulled out a card between two fingers. The card was jet black with sharp edges. It still smelled of ink from the special Vatican document folder. It was the top-tier symbol of Federal Credit: a black gold card.
"Pay by card, full amount."
Wang Li looked at the thing handed to her. Her professional fake smile instantly crumbled.
She stared at the black gold card, then at Chen Mo's faded school uniform. Two muffled gurgling sounds escaped her throat, as if someone had suddenly grabbed her by the neck.
These days, rich young masters all have some quirks. Do they like to disguise themselves as beggars for incognito visits?
"Sir...that's an S-level restricted area. Living people can't go in..."
"That's perfect, it'll be cooler." Chen Mo interrupted her, his tone as serious as if they were discussing the weather. "My pet has thick fur, this natural cooler will save a lot on electricity bills."
Before Wang Li's trembling hand could even touch the POS machine, the sensor-activated glass doors of the sales office slid open to both sides.
A series of hurried and heavy footsteps shattered the soft music that had been playing in the hall.
Four burly men wearing sunglasses rushed in first, forcefully blocking the originally spacious passage and clearing a path through the crowd.
The girl following closely behind wore the uniform of Linjiang No.1 Middle School, her skirt swaying with her steps.
She was extremely pale, with a sickly translucence beneath her skin. Her features were exquisite, yet expressionless. Her eyes seemed to see no one around her, only a cold, indifferent gaze.
As she walked by, the dust floating in the air seemed to be cleansed by holy light.
"That's... Lin Youyou?!"
Someone in the crowd gasped in a low voice.
The genius from Linjiang City who awakened the bloodline of an S-class Holy Angel. It is said that he was already offered a place at Imperial University before even graduating.
Lin Youyou kept her eyes straight ahead, her high heels clicking crisply on the marble floor. She stopped directly in front of the sand table.
Without even glancing at the person next to her, she slammed a platinum card onto the table.
"The Netherworld Abode, the one halfway up the mountain."
Her voice was crisp, yet tinged with a tight, hoarse quality. "No matter how much this person offers, I'll give double."
The air in the hall seemed to freeze.
Wang Li held Chen Mo's black gold card in her hand. Her eyes darted back and forth between the platinum card, her mind completely blank.
Today's almanac probably says it's auspicious for encountering evil spirits.
That's a haunted house that everyone avoids like the plague, so how come it's become a hot commodity? It's one thing for some weirdo with a black gold card to appear out of nowhere, but even the saintess, a symbol of light, is vying to live in a haunted house?
Chen Mo turned to the side, his gaze falling on Lin Youyou.
This was the first time he had seen this legendary school beauty up close. She certainly possessed an inviolable, sacred appearance. But in the all-seeing eye's view, the facade was stripped away, revealing a reality so real it was nauseating.
His gaze pierced through the expensive uniform fabric, and through the faint, ethereal shadow of wings behind her.
I saw a horrifying scene.
The girl's smooth, jade-like back was not clean.
A withered, pale hand, covered in livid spots, was deeply embedded in her spine.
Those five fingers were like rusty iron hooks. The nails had long since pierced the flesh and dug into the bone, greedily draining the host's life force.
In the center of that ghostly hand's palm, a gaping wound without lips silently emitted a shriek.
[Target: Lin Youyou]
[Status: Parasitized (89% Deep Erosion)]
[Parasite: Abyssal Wraith - Cursed Hand (A+ Rank Curse)]
[Note: She is searching for a grave, a place heavy with yin energy enough to suppress the thing on her back. Or rather, she is looking for a place of death where no one will find her.]
"So that's how it is."
Chen Mo let out a soft chuckle through his nose.
The sound wasn't loud, but it seemed particularly jarring in the otherwise quiet hall.
Lin Youyou suddenly turned her neck, several veins bulging on her neck. Two cold gazes shot out from her pale golden eyes.
"What are you laughing at?"
"It's nothing."
Chen Mo slowly and deliberately retracted his card, deftly flipping it between his fingers.
He took a half-step forward, closing the distance to Lin Youyou's safety. The pungent smell of disinfectant, though acrid, couldn't mask the putrid stench that seeped from her very bones.
Inside the backpack, the previously sleeping Little Black sensed that aura.
It excitedly nudged the backpack fabric, letting out a swallowing sound that only Chen Mo could hear—a slurping sound. It was drooling over something of the finest quality.
Chen Mo reached out and pressed down on the restless little guy in the backpack. His gaze was fixed on Lin Youyou's tense and somewhat pale face.
He lowered his voice and spoke in a volume that only the two of them could hear:
"Young man, if you're looking to buy a place to bury yourself, this house is indeed your first choice. However..."
His gaze didn't linger on her face. Instead, it slowly moved down, past her shoulders, and finally settled on the empty space behind her.
His eyes were full of mockery, like a butcher eyeing pieces of meat waiting to be slaughtered on a chopping board.
"The friend lying on your back doesn't seem to like damp environments."
This one sentence is more effective than any spell.
Lin Youyou's straight back suddenly stiffened. The light in her eyes shattered in an instant.
In that instant, she felt as if the blood in her body had stopped flowing. A sense of dread, as if her secrets had been completely exposed, made her forget to breathe.
"You...can see?!"
