Chapter 15 Harvest
Chapter 15 Harvest
This was a simple battle.
There was nothing thrilling or dramatic about it.
When one side in a battle is fully aware of all the other side's reaction methods, it means that the battle will only be one-sided.
Liu Bei would not call this a battle!
Aside from Ansel getting splattered with mud for not listening to Will, there was nothing noteworthy about this fight.
Under the bombardment of fireballs, the two-legged treants were burned to ashes, and the "bats" flying in the air became a pile of mud.
When the fireball spell landed, the already sluggish treants were ignited by the exploding fireball, turning into giant torches that burned and led to their deaths.
The monsters' only counterattack came from the mud bats that had miraculously survived the first wave of attacks. In their final moments, they summoned a small mud bat from a puddle next to the culprit, splattering Ansel with mud to prove they weren't without a fight.
Meanwhile, Ansel was washing off the mud by the river.
This was the first time Liu Bei had ever seen such a powerful spell. As the fireball fell, he wondered if he could survive under it if he were the one being ambushed.
The two swords in his hands were still sharp, but Liu Bei always felt that something was missing!
He suddenly realized that his personal martial prowess was completely insignificant, and this was only a third-level fireball spell. What about spells of higher levels?
"Is this the first time you've seen this thing?"
Will seemed to sense Liu Bei's momentary confusion.
"Hmm. I think my understanding of spellcasters might be a little off."
Liu Bei honestly expressed his confusion: "I never imagined that a mere three-ring spell could have such great power. I originally thought..."
Liu Bei didn't know how to describe his understanding. He had seen some of Ansel's spells before, but whether it was fire arrows or fire-breathing spells, the effects these spells could produce were the same effects that ordinary people could achieve with some simple tricks.
The "Greasy spell" is nothing more than a large oil stain; the "Flame Arrow" is self-explanatory; and even the "fire-breathing spell" can be given a reasonable explanation.
His understanding of magic remained at a very superficial level, even though he had seen the gods reshaping the world in his dreams, and even though he had encountered the "fate" shackles being inexplicably severed by the gravedigger.
But today, this fireball technique has given Liu Bei a glimpse of another possibility.
The Huainanzi contains many stories of people transforming into immortals, but these are ultimately myths, and the transformation process is too ethereal and unrealistic.
To this day, this fireball spell has shattered Liu Bei's understanding. That ball of fire was not the power of a god, and its explosion did not destroy the monsters in the area, but rather the deeply ingrained boundary between gods and humans in Liu Bei's mind.
So he asked, "Do you think that once a spellcaster's magical power reaches a certain level, they become, in a way, no different from so-called gods?"
Faced with Liu Bei's question, Will seemed somewhat evasive, but suddenly remembering that he had exchanged his soul for power from the devil, he immediately spoke frankly: "The current Goddess of the Magic Network was just a mortal before the Holy Cataclysm."
The Holy Catastrophe.
The books Liu Bei had read mentioned this era many times. According to legend, it was an era in which gods descended to the mortal world in the form of saints. In that catastrophe, gods fell and mortals ascended to godhood. Such events were commonplace.
"The Holy Catastrophe? Isn't that just a legend?"
"The Holy Catastrophe occurred during a turbulent year, and it has only been a mere century since then."
Liu Bei remained silent, and it took him a while to process the enormous impact of those words.
He suddenly realized that the descriptions in the books he had been reading recently were not just other people's imaginations, but things that actually happened to these authors!
During this period, although Liu Bei read a lot of books, he never dared to fully believe the descriptions in them. Every thing described in those books was challenging Liu Bei's worldview. Many times, Liu Bei would compare them to the immortals described in the Huainanzi.
Only now did Liu Bei realize how narrow-minded he had been, always applying his past experiences to the realities of the world.
Fortunately, it's not too late.
He immediately perked up: "That big tree at the swamp dock mentioned in the letter must be this giant tree!"
"Hey, Liu Bei, look what I found! There are magical items hidden here!"
Ansel, covered in mud, peeked out from behind a tree trunk, waving and beckoning the two to come over.
"I knew this kid would value looting more than anything! He's not even willing to clean himself up first."
The two arrived at the back of the tree trunk, where at the base of the roots, where vines entwined, a wooden box lay quietly.
A blue light shone from inside the open wooden crate.
Ansel had nothing in his hands, and his body was entangled in vines, which was probably the main reason why he hadn't washed himself.
"Hurry, Liu Bei, help me cut down these vines!"
Upon hearing this, Liu Bei immediately stepped forward.
"Don't panic, this is a trap! A vine trap left by the druids."
Will saw the incantations under the vines, but most of the runes were broken and dilapidated, clearly having been abandoned for a long time.
Will stepped forward and dismantled the vine trap. The vines that had been tightly binding Ansel no longer had the same regenerative ability after the trap was removed; instead, they withered and dried up in a short time.
Enraged, Ansel tore off the vines from his body and prepared to use magic to completely burn the tree trunk!
"Stop! Ansel, if you set this fire, how are we supposed to find any clues?"
Ansel only then remembered the purpose of his trip and said sullenly, "Since you've said that, then forget it! For the sake of the magical items here, I won't burn them."
Ansel withdrew the magic he had gathered, bent down, and picked up the gloves: "Liu Bei, this is good stuff! There's really something good here!"
As Ansel took out the glove, Liu Bei also noticed the abnormality on the tree trunk.
Ignoring Ansel's shouts, he stepped forward, about to peel back the loose bark, but stopped at the last moment: "Will, come check if there are any magic traps!"
Having learned his lesson from the previous vine trap, Liu Bei became more cautious.
No trap was found. The bark was immediately peeled back, and a letter lay quietly inside.
He took out the letter and handed it to Liu Bei.
Liu Bei took the letter and scanned it. He knew he had obtained the crucial evidence!
Ansel leaned closer and asked, "Liu Bei, what did the letter say?"
"It's just a reply, a reply from the Shadow Archdruid Iris to Kaha, promising to make Kaha the chief druid of the Woodland after the Thorn Ritual is completed." Liu Bei's tone was very relaxed. He really didn't expect that the Shadow Druid would be so lacking in vision. He felt more confident about what would happen next!
Upon hearing the contents of the letter, Ansel didn't mince words: "How can this Ielise still be so stupid! So many years have passed and she hasn't improved at all. As long as Halsin doesn't return, isn't that wicked woman the chief druid of the woodlands? Does she need to acknowledge it?"
After Ansel finished cursing, he stopped asking questions. Now he just wanted to show off to Liu Bei the magical weapons he had just found—the "Spark Hand" and the "Indigo Tree Shield"!
